At least 12 people were injured in a shooting in Columbia, the capital of South Carolina, on Saturday afternoon, but the situation is reportedly under control with all three suspected shooters arrested.

Among the 12 injured, 10 had gunshot wounds and had to be transported to the hospital, while two, who were injured in the “stampede” that followed, self-transported themselves to hospitals for treatment.

The youngest among those injured is a 15-year-old teenager, while the oldest victim of the shooting is 73 years old.

The incident took place in the premises of the Columbiana Centre Mall in the afternoon, but police chief William H ‘Skip’ Holbrook confirmed that there had been no deaths.

“We believe the individuals that were armed knew each other, and there was some type of conflict that occurred which resulted in gunfire,” Holbrook said in a press conference on Saturday after the situation at the mall had been brought under control.

“This was not a situation where we had some random person show up at a mall to discharge a firearm and injure people,” the police chief added, hinting that the shooting may have been planned well in advance.

Regardless, the timely police response to the incident helped avoid what may have resulted in a massacre, and mall officials thanked the Columbia Police for the same, saying, “Today’s isolated, senseless act of violence is extremely upsetting, and our thoughts are with everyone impacted. We are grateful for the quick response and continued support of our security team and our partners in law enforcement.”
