Virat Kohli has
been indispensable for the Indian cricket team. But his current form in IPL
gives us little confidence in his ability to perform in the upcoming T20 World
Cup in Australia. His below-the-belt strike rate will put the Chetan Sharma-led
selection committee in a big dilemma when they sit to select the squad for the
T20 World Cup. It is unlikely that the selection committee will take any bold
decision given that fact an in-form Kohli is a serious threat to the
opposition.

But in T20
cricket, a squad filled with in-form cricketers could produce a better result.
In the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE, under Kohli’s captaincy, the Indian team could no impact, making a
group stage exit.

BCCI and its
selection committee would not like to see a repeat of the lacklustre
performance in October-November this year. In the UAE T20 World Cup, Kohli failed both as
a captain and batter. It has been three years now that the former captain
struggling to get his mojo back.

In his last two
T20s in the IPL 2022, in uncharacteristic batting displays, Kohli scored 53-ball 58 and 33-ball
30. Captain Rohit Sharma’s form is also a concern, but his India form is not as a big concern as Kohli’s form is.

Kohli’s woeful
form has continued for way too long now and 216 runs in 11 games at a lowly
strike rate of 111 is neither indicative of the former skipper’s quality nor
his calibre. As a top-order batter, his record in Powerplay is not good either.
In IPL 2022, he has batted in Powerplay in seven games and has played 16 dot
balls but scored 61 runs in 55 balls during the period.

Former
national chief selector MSK Prasad said, “I want Virat to take a significant break
and before the Asia Cup, he should be fresh, up and running.”

As Australian
pitches will be sporting and the chances of scoring will be pretty, India need
batters who are in form. Selectors still have time to take a call on Kohli but
a judgement that lacks vision will affect India’s chances in Australia.
