Severe storms in Assam and Mizoram have left several dead and damaged hundreds of homes. 

Assam- 

The death toll in the storms accompanied by heavy rain and lightning strikes, sweeping across Assam for the last three days, has risen to 20. 

According to data shared by Chief Executive Officer of Assam State Disaster Management Authority GD Tripathi, 22 districts in the state have reported storm and lightning incidents in the last three days, impacting 95,239 people.

“Total of 20 deaths have been reported during this season due to storms and lightning, of which 19 deaths were reported in April (till April 17) and one in the last week of March,” the data stated.

Strong winds along with heavy showers and lightning strikes have also caused damage to homes, uprooted trees and snapped electric lines in many parts of the state.

Over12,000 houses and other establishments have been damaged in the storm raging since Thursday.

Mizoram – 

A massive storm accompanied by heavy rain and hail damaged over 200 houses in Mizoram. A church building was also damaged in Mizoram’s Kolasib and Mamit districts. No fatalities have so far been reported in the storm that hit the two districts late on Saturday.

Preliminary report stated that at least 220 houses and the church building were damaged in Kolasib district, and about 18 houses in Mamit district near the Assam border.

Kolasib Assembly constituency MLA and Supply Minister K Lalrinliana on Sunday visited the villages affected by the storm to take stock of the situation and assured of assistance from the state government.
