‘S.W.A.T.’ has been renewed for Season 6 on CBS and Shemar Moore, who plays Sgt Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson, announced it on Twitter. 

In a follow-up post, the man who plays the leader of a S.W.A.T. team in the Los Angeles Police Department, continued “From our whole CAST, CREW, & PRODUCTION TEAM, Thank you to all of our @swatcbs FANS!!! We couldn’t do this without you”. CBS also shared the news in a tweet. 

The show ends Season 5 on Sunday, May 22, and joins a slew of CBS series that have been renewed, including many ‘NCIS’ spinoffs.

The ‘S.W.A.T.’ logline reads “Torn between loyalty to where he was raised and allegiance to his brothers in blue, Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson strives to bridge the divide between his two worlds. However, Hondo is forced to question his professional identity when he is demoted from Squad Leader after going public to expose racial corruption within the LAPD”.

The show is inspired by the television series and feature film of the same name. 

What to expect in ‘S.W.A.T.’ Season 6?

In the CBS cop drama, Hondo is an ex-Marine who decides to swap trying to save the world for trying to save his local community. He does this by becoming a police officer who heads a specialized tactical unit. 

While each episode sees the team take on a new criminal, there are a few overarching narratives, like an anti-establishment group with a penchant for violence.

However, the underlying common theme of the series is Hondo grappling with his loyalties to the police and to his community, especially since ‘S.W.A.T.’ doesn’t shy away from doubling down on instances of police brutality in Los Angeles and the US. 

There have been references to Rodney King, and more contemporary victims of police brutality like Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. 

The self-righteous Hondo has been seeing his acts of good not really making an impact in a world where systemic corruption and racism are deeply ingrained. His hara-kiri comes when Hondo takes a stand against racist cops within the department, earning the dislike of his fellow officers.

Season 6 is sure to continue with the fallout of Hondo’s actions, as the team struggles to find their footing while saving the day. Among other ‘S.W.A.T.’ members, Deacon’s personal life is bound to make its presence felt as he struggles to raise his children and provide for his family. Hondo’s second-in-command was in cahoots in exposing the racist cops and will continue feeling the brunt of his actions too.

Meanwhile, Chris Alonso and Jim Street might have finally realized they’re better as a couple than just remaining friends. However, the two have their own issues, with Chris not fully recovered from witnessing the death of a fellow female officer, Erica, and Street having to deal with his mother’s toxicity.

We fully expect to see Luca back too, trying to live up to the generational legacy of being a S.W.A.T. officer. 

A premiere date for ‘S.W.A.T.’ Season 6 is not out yet.
