Taraji P. Henson is returning as the host of the 2022 BET Awards on June 26. The awards are taking place in the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Henson shared in a statement with BET Lifestyle, “We need our women to feel whole, valued, and strong.” She has been constantly vocal about mental health and its prioritisation, particularly with regards to Black women. She also revealed to BET.com that the best advice she received was from her father.

She quoted her father, saying, “Get from around those who have your same problems and get around those with your solutions.”

Moving on to what she considered the best part of being a black woman, she claimed that it was “the way they loved”.

“We have a great way of nurturing and loving when we love. Sometimes it can be our trap because we love others more than we love ourselves,” she continued.

She also talked about her mental health, stating that it was a journey, and that “the healing didn’t happen overnight.”

“It takes time, it’s a journey, and it’s something you have to be patient with.”

 Henson also reportedly spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, saying that according to her, the BET Awards had represented “pride for the accomplishments of Black people”. It was also supposedly “a safe place for them to celebrate each other for them to get the shine that they wouldn’t necessarily get on a different kind of stage.” 

Henson has also spoken about how crucial healthy boundaries can be, quoting, “Being strong is loving ourselves enough to say no.”
