While some believe that there’s no such thing as being overdressed, others ban those who dare to.

Hundreds of young people have started to show up in formal suits and tuxedos outside cinema halls, ready to buy tickets to ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ in style.

Their matching outfits aren’t a coincidence, but a TikTok trend known as ‘Gentleminions’.

The viral trend consists of showing up in a fancy attire, mostly suits, to something as basic as a regular cinema hall. Participants of the trend then buy tickets to Universal’s ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ and record snippets of their day and share it on the platform.

Promoting the trend on Twitter, film studio Universal Pictures wrote: “To everyone showing up to @Minions in suits: we see you and we love you.”

However, participants of the trend have failed to garner a similar reaction from multiple cinemas, which have banned their entry and accused them of indiscipline and vandalism.

Mallard Cinema manager Daniel Phillips-Smith told BBC: “It’s been absolutely heartbreaking. We’ve had families who won’t even go back into the screen when we’ve tried to sort it out, families leaving before the film has even started, and of course the children have been in tears.”

Box office staff told the outlet that young adults in suits had been “cheering, clapping, whooping” during the animated film’s screening.

“We were trying to talk to people on the way in after a while, but that wasn’t really getting anywhere. So we had to just decide to put a stop to it and say thanks very much, but we’re not doing the whole TikTok trend thing,” a staff member said.

On the other hand, the Vue cinema chain said that it was welcoming all customers, suit-wearers or not, to watch the film, which had been “incredibly popular” during the opening weekend.
