UNESCO aims to protect sites it considers significant by assigning them the status of a World Heritage site. The criteria to determine a site’s importance includes ten pointers, out of which at least one must be met. It also must prove to be of “outstanding universal value.” Currently, there are 1154 sites around the globe that are included in the list that meet the criteria bifurcated into cultural and natural characteristics. Listed below are the countries with the most number of UNESCO World Heritage sites:

  • Italy

As of today, Italy is the country with the most UNESCO World Heritage sites, including 58 locations spanning across the country. Some of these landmarks include the City of Verona, the Church and Dominican Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, and the Archaeological areas of Pompei, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata.

  • China

Comprising 56 sites, China has some of the most recognisable World Heritage sites. These include The Great Wall, the Imperial Palaces of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in Beijing and Shenyang, and The Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor.

  • Spain

49 World Heritage sites are located in this country, from the Archaeological Ensemble of Merida to the Historic Center of Cordoba. A few others are the Teide National Park, Las Medulas, and the Old Town of Santiago de Compostela.

  • Germany

Germany’s 51 UNESCO World Heritage sites comprise the Würzburg Residence, the Rhine Valley, the Cologne Cathedral, and the Aachen Cathedral.

  • France

France is the fifth country with the most World Heritage sites, with 49 such wonders on the list. The most notable ones include Carcassonne, the Chartres Cathedral, and the Gulf of Porto.
