Authorities said a tornado struck Northern Michigan on Friday afternoon, killing at least 1 person, injuring 23 others, also damaging homes and businesses.

After the vortex hit Gaylord, about 230 miles north of Detroit, an unknown number of people were taken to hospitals by ambulance, according to Michigan State Police.

Images of mobile homes flipped and pushed over at a Gaylord trailer park were broadcast on NBC affiliate WPBN in Traverse City, Michigan. It also showed footage of structures being demolished near Gaylord Cinema West theatres.

According to the station, power disruptions in the area caused Gaylord’s Otsego Memorial Hospital to send any new patients to neighbouring hospitals.

According to PowerOutage.US, more than 22,000 customers in Northern Michigan were without power on Friday, including more than a third of Gaylord’s utility users.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Friday that she will dedicate the resources needed to restore and repair devastated communities.

“My heart goes out to the families and small businesses impacted by the tornado and severe weather in Gaylord,” Whitmer tweeted. “To the entire Gaylord community—Michigan is with you.”

At 4:46 p.m., Michigan State Police tweeted that emergency crews were on their way, that debris such as downed trees and power lines had blocked roadways, and that the storm had damaged “multiple homes and businesses.”

According to state police, Gaylord declared a curfew from local time 7 pm to 8 am and asked residents to shelter in place.

At local time 3:53 pm, a National Weather Service employee reported seeing a tornado touch down on the west side of Gaylord.

Rich Pollman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, confirmed the vortex by email.

A next-day walkthrough of the afflicted area to measure its likely course and damage is frequently included in the agency’s procedure of properly certifying tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service, a tornado warning is still in place for the county that contains Gaylord, Otsego, and Posen.

Through 7 pm local time, a tornado watch was also in effect for parts of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.

A cold front from the Great Lakes to the Southeast collided with exceptionally warm temperatures in the Northeast, resulting in the tornado.

Severe storms are expected from Lower Michigan to southern Oklahoma and eastern Texas through Saturday, according to federal forecasters.
