London was placed under its first-ever ‘red’ weather warning and millions were urged to stay indoors as Storm Eunice pounded the UK with record-breaking winds on Friday, reported Associated Press.

Captains Anchit Bhardwaj and Aditya Rao garnered praise for their skill in landing the respective planes — AI-147 from Hyderabad and AI-145 from Goa — even as flights were cancelled, delayed or diverted during the storm.

Jerry Dyers, founder of Big Jet TV who recorded the video, can be heard saying in the live stream, “Just checking to see if he’s gonna land. Winds are gusting.. it looks like he’s got it.” Once the plane successfully landed, he remarked, “A very skilled Indian pilot there.”

An Air India official told India Today TV, “BA (British Airways) and QR (Qatar Airways) flights missed approach and did go-around. Our crew landed smoothly as they are well trained.”

The storm Eunice, one of the most damaging in Europe, in recent history, left crews working without break, to clean up and restore power for the people of Britain. There were at least 12 casualties from the storm, and many were due to trees falling. Initially, a gush of wind was recorded on the Isle of Wight.

Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading in England, told AP “A strong jet stream like this can act like a production line for storms, generating a new storm every day or two. There have been many occasions in the recent past when two or more damaging storms have passed across the U.K. and other parts of Europe in the space of a few days”.

Hundreds of flight had to be delayed or canceled in lieu of the storm.
