Lionel Messi‘s reunion with former Barcelona teammate and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star Neymar looks likely to be cut short, with reports suggesting the Brazilian is looking for a new destination this summer.

Neymar had joined PSG in 2017 for a world record fee of €222 million, and enjoyed a few years of domestic, not European, success with PSG’s star-studded squad.

While Neymar’s contract with the club was automatically extended till 2027 on July 1 this year, Marca reports that both PSG and the Brazilian have reached a consensus about his departure, something that PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi, also hinted at.

“A possible departure of Neymar this summer? What I can tell you is that we expect all the players to do much more than last season,” Al-Khelaifi recently told La Parisien, commenting on rumours about the Brazilian’s departure.

While Al-Khelaifi may not have directly said it, Neymar had a poor season with PSG in 2021/22, managing only 13 goals in 28 appearances, an underwhelming return for a player deemed to be of the same quality as Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Although Marca report that both PSG and Neymar have reached a consensus that his transfer would be the best outcome for both parties, teammate Messi disagrees.

According to Argentine daily La Nacion, “Leo wants Neymar to stay. For now, it’s a pretty rough push and pull. Neymar’s exit could also be complicated, since the player wants to collect the debt of some €200 million that the French club owes him.”

“The striker has a contract with the French club and is not willing to give up money or reputation, they warned from his entourage. Neymar earns about €30 million a year, so the negotiations to leave will be complex,” the report further added.

Since joining PSG in 2017, Neymar has scored 100 goals in 144 appearances for the club across all competitions. If, however, a deal for his departure works out, it is unclear where he will move to.
