Highland Park, a suburban city located in Illinois, fell victim to a deadly shooting at a July 4 parade which killed at least six people and wounded 24.

“Today a shooter struck in Highland Park during the Independence Day parade. My campaign team and I were gathering at the start of the parade when the shooting started. My team and I are safe and secure. We are monitoring the situation closely and in touch with the Mayor,” Congressman Brad Schneider, who represents Illinois’ 10th District, tweeted on Monday.

Highland Park is situated in the southeastern part of Lake County and lies about 40 kilometers north of downtown Chicago. It is one of the multiple municipalities located on the North Shore of the Chicago metropolitan area.

According to the US Census Bureau, the city is spread across an area of 12.2 square miles, which consists of 12.2 square miles of land and 0.039 square miles of water bodies.

The earliest known account of the city’s discovery is from 1833, when a traveler described visiting a village that was filled with bark-covered structures. The unknown tourist also talked about eating roasted corn with an official named Nic-sa-mah at a place likely situated south of present-day Clavey Road.

In 1867, ten men, who later became the original stockholders of the Highland Park Building Company, decided to buy the city for $39,198.70. At the time, the place mostly consisted of farms and forested land. It was only on March 11, 1869, when Highland Park was officially made a city, with a sparse populace of 500 people.

From the time it was established until November 1, 1900, Highland Park was a “dry” city where the sale of alcohol was prohibited.

Today, Highland Park has various attractions for visitors, including the Ravinia Festival, the Willits House, and a downtown shopping district. For thalassophiles, the city offers three public beaches- Rosewood Beach, Moraine Beach, and Park Avenue Beach.
