Borussia Dortmund star striker Erling Haaland is on the verge of completing a move to Manchester City, with an official announcement of the signing expected to be made by the end of this week.

Haaland, who has already completed his medical with the Citizens, will sign for the Premier League club for a fee believed to be around €60 million, lower than his reported €75 million release clause.

While still a considerable sum, €60 million is a bargain for the free-scoring Norwegian striker who is valued at around €160 million.

Haaland comes from a family of footballers and was born in Leeds, England in 2000, when his father Alfie Haaland was playing for the city’s football club, who, like now, were in the Premier League at the time.

After three years in England, the Haalands moved back to their home town of Bryne in Norway, where Erling joined Bryne Fotballklubb’s youth academy at the age of five.

In 2016, Haaland made his professional debut for Bryne as a winger in Norway’s second division football league, marking the start of his meteoric rise as one of football’s greatest emerging talents.

In 2017, a 16-year-old Haaland signed for Norwegian club Molde, scoring a winner on his debut for the club. By 2018, Haaland was becoming a regular, and on July 2018, scored four goals in 21 minutes against the then-unbeaten champions Brann. In 39 senior appearances for Molde, Haaland would go on to bag 14 goals, which made him one of Europe’s top young talents.

Expectedly, Red Bull Salzburg snatched Haaland from Molde in 2019, and the Norwegian went on to score 17 goals in 16 appearances for the Austrian side, a sensational record that attracted the attention of Borussia Dortmund.

Haaland then joined Dortmund in January 2020, and went on to score a mind-blowing 85 goals in 88 appearances for the Bundesliga side. The 21-year-old’s prolific scoring record also helped Dortmund lift the DFB-Pokal in the 2020-2021 season.

The Norwegian also holds numerous individual records, and was named the UEFA Champions League Forward of the Season in 2020-2021, when he scored 10 goals in the competition, two more than second-placed Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe, with 200 less minutes played.

Given Haaland’s growth as a footballer and his direct, energetic style of play, his signature is expected to heavily bolster an already impeccable Manchester City side, who are poised to lift the Premier League title yet again this season.
