Jasprit Bumrah has been officially ruled out from India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad. The fast bowler had already been ruled out of the ongoing 3-match T20I series against South Africa due to a back injury. The BCCI has announced that Mohammed Shami will be replacing Bumrah.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Mohammed Shami as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement in India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad,” stated the Board of Control for Cricket in India in a press release.

Who is Jasprit Bumrah?

Jasprit Jasbirsingh Bumrah is an Indian international cricketer. He is a member of the Indian National Cricket Team in all formats of the game. Bumrah is the first Asian bowler to take 5 wickets in a Test innings while playing in England, South Africa, and Australia, all in the same year.

Bumrah was born on December 6, 1993, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, to a Sikh Punjabi family. He represents Gujrat in first-class cricket and made his debut against Vidarbha in October 2013 during the 2013-14 season.

Bumrah, a right-arm medium-fast pacer from Gujarat with an unusual bowling action, made his T20 debut against Maharashtra in the 2012–13 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and was named Man of the Match. His 3/14 figures were crucial in Gujarat’s final victory over Punjab.

Bumrah rose to prominence as a result of his unconventional action. He has an unusual sling-arm action that, when combined with natural pace and a peculiar release point of his deliveries, makes it difficult for batsmen to pick him up early. He bowls consistently outside the off-stump or short.

Bumrah came into the limelight when he was 19 years old with his IPL debut. He finished with 3/32 figures against Royal Challengers Banglore. Although he played a couple of games in Pepsi IPL 2013 for Mumbai Indians, the team retained him for the 2014 IPL season.

Bumrah scored his maiden first-class century (55) against Australia A during the India tour of Australia on December 11, 2020. In the T20I series against the West Indies in August 2016, he became the bowler with the most Twenty20 International wickets (28) in a calendar year, breaking Dirk Nannes’ record.

Bumrah was named Player of the Match in the second T20 series of England’s 2016–17 India tour in January 2017. He took two wickets and gave 20 runs. During the 2017 Sri Lanka tour, Bumrah took the most wickets (15) of any fast bowler in a five-match bilateral ODI series. He is remembered for bowling a no-ball that resulted in a wicket in the Champions Trophy final in 2017 and the same year he was named to India’s Test squad for the series against South Africa in November 2017.

Bumrah took his second five-wicket haul in Tests, with figures of 5/85 from 29 overs, in India’s 203-run win over England in the third Test Match of the India Tour of England 2018.

He was named to India’s squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup in April 2019. The International Cricket Council (ICC) named him one of five exciting newcomers to the Cricket World Cup.

Bumrah was named to India’s squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2021. He was one of only three fast bowlers in the main squad, the other two being Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, a white-ball specialist.

Due to the absence of regular vice-captain KL Rahul, Bumrah was named India’s vice-captain for the T20I and Test series against Sri Lanka in February 2022. Bumrah took his maiden Test five-wicket haul in India in March 2022, during the second-day night Test against Sri Lanka.
