Subodh Uniyal, 57, is an Indian politician and a member of
the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Uniyal represents the Narendra Nagar
constituency of Tehri Garhwal district in the Uttarakhand Legislative.

Uniyal
was born in the year 1960 in Narendranagar, Uttarakhand, to a Garhwali family.
He lived in his paternal village of Narendranagar, and completed his high
school education. His family relocated to Allahabad when he finished his
schooling. As a young boy, he was always inspired by the nation’s great

Uniyal is
a well-known political figure in Uttarakhand. The outgoing minister of
agriculture and farmers’ welfare represents the Narendranagar constituency in
the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly. Contesting on a BJP ticket in 2017, Uniyal defeated independent candidate Om Gopal Rawat by 4,972 votes.

Before joining the BJP in October 2016, Uniyal was a popular Congress leader
who had won many elections as a member of the Congress party. Subodh Uniyal was one of nine rebel MLAs and
ministers who switched to the BJP in 2016, causing havoc in the Uttarakhand
government and forcing then-CM Harish Rawat to show his majority in the
House.

On 14 February, the Uttarakhand assembly elections of 2022 were held in a single phase for all 70 seats. There were 632 candidates in
total, including 152 independents, whose fates were sealed in electronic voting
machines by the state’s 81 lakh electorate.

The Aam Aadmi Party, like Punjab and Goa, has
attempted to make inroads in Uttarakhand, which has previously had bipolar
electoral contests between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
