A woman thought it would be a good idea to name her dog Covid, which, at best, does not conjure up pleasant memories and, at worst, may jog the memory of someone who lost a loved one to the pandemic. The pet owner was publicly shamed for naming her dog after a virus.

Pet naming usually involves a lot of thought as people try to choose a name that best suits their dog’s build and personality. Many pet owners name their animals after how or where they were discovered.

Recently, a woman thought it would be a good idea to name her dog Covid, which, at best, brings up negative memories and, at worst, can trigger someone who lost a close relative to the pandemic.

The pet owner was publicly shamed for naming her dog after a virus.

According to Mirror, she explained why she chose Covid as a name for her dog on Reddit, saying she rescued him during the national lockdown.

“We discovered a stray puppy at the start of our lockdown,” she explained.

“It began with feeding him scraps in the back garden, where we spent so much of our time.” He’s moved in and is likely to stay unless someone steps forward to claim him. We posted a notice about him in a few village shops.”

During one of her walks, the woman claims she was confronted about her name by a couple.

“…a couple heard us calling his name while playing by the beach yesterday,” she explained.

“They came over and said it’s insensitive because they lost an uncle to the virus.” “How would we feel if they called their pet cancer or death?” they asked.

She then went to Reddit to find out if “Covid” is truly an offensive name or if the stranger couple simply “overreacted.”

“I mean, use practically any other example and it looks really bad fast,” one user wrote.

“Would you name a dog AIDS and then run around in public yelling, ‘Here AIDS!’?” ‘Come here, boy, that’s a great AIDS!'”

They went on to say that running around on the beach yelling “COVID! COVID!” was the equivalent of shouting fire in a crowded theatre.

“Would you name a dog Ebola, AIDS, or cancer?” another user asked.

The most surprising revelation came from a third user. “We named our kitten Corona, but we call him RowRow,” they explained. I feel a little bad, but since he was born in March, we figure he’ll be a little light in all this darkness.”
