Benedict Cumberbatch has taken up a variety of roles over the years. Audiences know him as “Doctor Strange”, or “Sherlock Holmes”. From ‘The Imitation Game’ to ‘12 Years a Slave’, he has been a part of a number of projects with a variety of genres. Here are his 5 best roles on screen so far.

1. Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock)

Benedict Cumberbatch gained international recognition through ‘Sherlock’. He is well known for playing the titular character, solving crimes in modern-day London. He has portrayed the character’s intelligence and tendency to be cold appropriately. 

2. Alan Turing (The Imitation Game)

In this 2014 film Benedict Cumberbatch plays the genius English mathematician Alan Turing, often considered the father of modern computers. During World War II, Turing tries to crack the German Enigma code with help from fellow mathematicians while attempting to come to terms with his troubled private life.

3. Peter Guillam (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy)

‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ is based on the novel by John le Carre. Benedict Cumberbatch played the role of Peter Guillam, a recurring character of le Carre novels. Peter is the right-hand man of George Smiley. The movie got an Oscar nomination.

4. David (Wreckers)

Cumberbatch played the role of David in ‘Wreckers’. His character portrays a man with a troubled past and a dysfunctional family. His brother deals with mental health issues, and his wife cheats on him. The disturbing childhood memories that stir up continuously in David’s life, make the character meaningful. 

5. Doctor Strange (MCU)

Doctor Strange appears to be a renowned doctor with an inflated ego at first. All of this changes when a car accident ruins his hand, ending this career. Strange spirals into debt searching for a cure and comes to find the Mystic Arts. He also foresees the end of ‘Avengers: Endgame’, knowing that it would take a final sacrifice from Iron Man to take out Thanos once and for all.
