Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, on Netflix, tells the story of the eponymous serial killer, also called the Milwaukee Cannibal or the Milwaukee Monster. The series is largely told from the perspectives of Dahmer’s victims. 

Evan Peters stars as the American serial killer who was responsible for the murder and dismemberment of 17 boys and men between 1978 and 1991. Here are the five best movies on Jeffrey Dahmer, if you like the Netflix limited series. 

Dahmer (2002)

The fictionalized retelling of the life of one of America’s most notorious serial killers, sees Jeremy Renner play Dahmer, contemplating his next victim. The film shows how Dahmer’s childhood, including the tortured relationship with his father, had a hand in shaping the monster that history has remembered.

The Jeffrey Dahmer Files (2012) 

The independent documentary tracks the serial killer in the summer of his arrest. It interviews the medical examiner, Dahmer’s next-door neighbour, and the lead detective. Fictionalized re-enactments intersperse the narration.

My Friend Dahmer (2017) 

This movie is set in Dahmer’s childhood and shows how the young boy had a troubled youth, formed unhealthy obsessions, and developed a liking for alcohol. However, as Dahmer grew up, he began transforming into something more sinister. 

The Trial of Jeffrey Dahmer (1992) 

This film focuses on putting the serial killer on trial. Initially, Dahmer had pled not guilty due to reason of temporary insanity. However, when he was found guilty, Dahmer expressed remorse for his actions and wished for death.

Serial Killers: The Real Life Hannibal Lecters (2001)

This is a documentary which examines real-life serial killers and compares them with the fictionalized cannibal, Hannibal Lecter. Albert Fish, Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Andrei Chikatilo, and John Wayne Gacy are all included in this documentary and these men all have one thing in common – a traumatic childhood. Some also turned to cannibalism, which the documentary discusses in detail.
