Mike
Flanagan is an American filmmaker whose work has acquired appreciation from
critics for his directorial capacities and lack of reliance on jump scares. He
is widely popular for his horror creations. Here is a list of five of the best
works by Mike Flanagan.

1. Absentia (2011)

Absentia
is an independent supernatural horror film that is written, directed and edited
by Flanagan. Released in 2011, the film is about a pregnant woman named Tricia
whose husband has been missing and after seven years she decides to declare him
to be dead in absentia.

2. Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)

Ouija:
Origin of Evil is a 2016 horror film directed by Flanagan and written jointly
by him and Jeff Howard. This film is a prequel to the 2014 thriller Ouija. The
plot narrates the tale of a widow and her family and their introduction of an Ouija
board to their fraudulent seance business, by means of which they attract a
spirit that takes possession of their youngest daughter.

3. Gerald’s Game (2017)

An
adaptation of Stephen King’s 1992 novel of the same name, Gerald’s Game is a psychological
horror film. The film is directed and edited by Flanagan and co-written by him
and Jeff Howard. The story of the film is about a couple that arrives at a
secluded house for a holiday. When the husband dies due to a heart attack, the
wife, who is left tied to the bed, has to find out ways to survive while
fighting her inner demons.

4. The Haunting of the Hill House (2018)

Directed
by Mike Flanagan for Netflix, The Haunting of the Hill House is the first entry
in Netflix’s anthology series The Haunting. The story switches back and forth
between two timelines, surrounding five adult siblings whose paranormal
encounters continue to bother them in the present day, and flashbacks showing
how on a dramatic night in 1992, the family escaped the estate.

5. Midnight Mass (2021)

Released in September 2021 on Netflix, Midnight Mass is a horror television miniseries. Directed by Flanagan, the story revolves around a poverty-stricken island community that starts to experience paranormal occurrences after a mysterious priest shows up.
