Jennifer Lawrence has created a stir on social media by suggesting that Hunger Games was the first time any female actor was cast in a lead role in a Hollywood action film. ‘Katniss Everdeen’ made these comments during her Variety Actors on Actors chat with fellow Academy Award winner Viola Davis.
Lawrence is being trolled on Twitter because of her comment, and many users even listed out action films led by female stars that were released before The Hunger Games franchise. Have a look at some of the films right here:
Alien (1979)
Ridley Scott’s 1979 film, Alien, is a story about a group of astronauts who steal an alien egg from a planet that they are visiting. The egg soon hatches and out comes a deadly alien who manages to kill everyone on the spaceship barring Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), who puts up a fight and manages to escape with her life. Weaver went on to star in three more instalments of the franchise.

Kill Bill Vols. 1 & 2 (2003, 2004)
Quentin Tarantino’s stylised violence reached its peak in this martial arts film with Uma Thurman’s character Beatrix Kiddo at its centre. Kiddo was a part of a group of international killers who attacked her and killed her would-be husband’s family. She survives the ordeal and sets out to seek revenge in this two-part action blockbuster.
Coffy (1973)
Pam Grier is a legend of blaxploitation cinema who led a number of action movies during her heydays. Coffy, directed by Jack Hill, is widely considered a milestone in the history of blaxploitation cinema. Yes, Madam (1985)
This 1985 Hong Kong martial arts film has two female stars in leading roles- Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock. The story centers around their characters as they try to solve a murder case.
Resident Evil (2003)
Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez starred in this 2003 action movie based on the eponymous video game franchise. The film’s success spun off a number of sequels and made it a well-established brand.
