Legendary Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar died on Wednesday (July 7). He was 98. He had been admitted at the intensive care unit of Mumbai’s Hinduja hospital since last Tuesday. He died at 7.30 am on Wednesday, Dr Jalil Parkar, who was treating the actor, told PTI.

“With a heavy heart and profound grief, I announce the passing away of our beloved Dilip Saab, few minutes ago. We are from God and to Him we return,” Kumar’s family friend Faisal Farooqui posted from the late actor’s Twitter handle.

Widely known as the ‘Tragedy King of Bollywood’, the legendary actor’s extraordinary acting skills, charismatic onscreen appearance and good looks have left fans and followers charmed and speechless, making him one of most celebrated actors of B-town.

Kumar’s career spans over six decades. He has acted in over 65 films in his career and is best known for his roles in films which includes – Devdas (1955), Naya Daur (1957), Mughal-e-Azam (1960), Ganga Jamuna (1961), Kranti (1981) and Karma (1986).

He last seen on the silver screen in Qila in 1998. Dilip Kumar was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015.

His Real Name

Dilip Kumar’s real name is Mohammad Yusuf Khan. A popular actor from Bombay Talkies, Devika Rani, crowned him with this stage name ‘Dilip Kumar’. Prior to finalising the third one, two other names – Uday Kumar and Vaaman Kumar were also considered for the actor’s stage name.

From Pakistan to India

Dilip Kumar is the first and foremost actor in Bollywood who hails from India’s neighbouring country, Pakistan.

First Award Winner

Dilip Kumar is the first star to have successfully earned the trophy for the Best Actor in Filmfare Awards. He got his first break in the movie ‘Jwar Bhata‘ on the recommendation of iconic star Ashok Kumar. He was also his mentor in his initial days of acting.

Refused Saira Banu

Dilip Kumar once refused to work opposite Saira Banu. But destiny had planned something else as he ended up marrying her in 1966 at the age of 44. Saira Banu was just 22 then. Later, the Devdas star married a Hyderabadi girl Asma in 1980. But the marriage didn’t last long. He recalls his marriage with Asma as ‘something he would like to forget about’.
