The nominations for the 73rd Emmy Awards, which are the television’s equivalent of the Oscars, were announced on Tuesday. The awards will be held on September 19 at an in-person ceremony in Los Angeles. Among the nominations Disney+’s ‘The Mandalorian’ and Netflix’s ‘The Crown’ bagged top honours with 24 nominations each. Disney’s new streaming service, in only its second year, also topped the prestigious limited series category, where Marvel superhero spin-off ‘WandaVision’ earned 23 nominations.

The Television Academy’s 25,000 voters spent several months stuck at home, leaving them ample time to sift through a stripped-down selection of series from their sofas.

But there were some notable names missing from the nominations list. Here’s a look at the shows and stars who did not find a significant mention in Emmy 2021 nomination list:

– The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: The Marvel series that followed ‘WandaVision’ did win some technical nods, but did not feature in any of the Actor of Series categories. The show, which stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, was streamed on Disney+.

– Ted Danson: The star of the extremely popular show ‘Mr Mayor’ failed to win a single nomination for the 73rd Emmys.

– Small Axe: The show ‘Small Axe’ depicts the real-life experiences of the West Indian community in London. Set between 1969 and 1982, the five-part anthology has been directed by Oscar-winner Steve McQueen. The show did win a lot of accolades for putting a spotlight on racism in contemporary UK, but it failed to make the cut at the Emmys.

– Desus & Mero: While the late-night comedy series ‘Desus & Mero’ became a hit during the COVID-19 pandemic, it failed to woo the judges at the Emmys.

This year’s Emmy will be one of the first major award functions to be held in front of a live audience since the COVID-19 pandemic began. It will feature a limited audience of nominees and their guests. Last year’s edition was broadcast from an empty theatre, with winners beaming in via video call.
