The latest creation of the Italian fashion house Gucci is
creating waves on social media. Not for its unique style, lines or design but
for its price. What looks like a simple Indian kurta has a price tag of Rs 2.5
lakh, something desi social media users are finding hard to digest. This is not
the first time topline fashion brands have invited criticism over hefty price
tags or for allegedly being ‘culturally inappropriate’.

From dresses to necklaces and turbans, many creations have
been panned for one reason or the other. Let’s take a look at some of the
collections that made news for all the wrong reasons:

Indian style Kaftan by Italian fashion house Gucci

Fashion house Gucci is being trolled for its new ‘range of
kaftans’ that is being sold at an exorbitant price.  The ‘floral
embroidery organic linen kaftan’ ranges from USD 2,100 (Rs 1.5 lakh) to USD
3,500 (Rs 2.5 lakh).  Netizens were quick to point out the similarities
between the kaftans and the simple Indian kurta, adding that they could buy
similar products much cheaper. Taking to social media, the users trolled the
international fashion brand and expressed their shock at such marketing.

‘Indy Full Turban’ again by Gucci

Another creation from Gucci stable that made headlines was
the ‘Indy Full Turban’, showcased as a part of the 2019 collection. The prodict
is listed for sale on the website of luxury department store Nordstrom for a
whopping $790 (Rs 57,000). Soon, Sikhs from across the world responded, calling
it ‘cultural appropriation’ that was offensive.

“As a Sikh, I see this as a huge sign of disrespect and
disregard toward Sikhism,” a user tweeted.

Scarf inspired by traditional Palestinian keffiyeh by LV

French fashion house Louis Vuitton faced accusations of
cultural appropriation over a $705 scarf inspired by the Palestinian keffiyeh.
On the official website of the brand, where the Monogram Keffiyeh Stole is
listed, the accessory is described as: “inspired by the classic Keffiyeh and
enriched with House signatures.”

Bottega Veneta’s  telephone-cords inspired necklace

The Italian luxury brand made news for selling a necklace,
which resembled coiled telephone cords, for Rs. 1 Lakh. Called the ‘Necklace’,
the accessory resembled the classic landline telephone cord and is priced at
USD 2,000 (Rs 1,45,189). The page also shared a collage of the necklace with
telephone cords worth USD 5 (Rs 362) with a caption that reads, “Bottega
is the new Vetements (sic).”

Louis Vuitton’ airplane-shaped bag

Louis Vuitton created uproar on social media when the brand
started selling an airplane-shaped bag, at an exorbitant price of USD 39,000 or
approximately Rs 28, 67,046.

Social media users  were shocked to see the whooping price of the
bag. Some users said that the price of the bag is more than what you’d pay for
a real plane, in most cases
