Actor Shreyas Talpade recalled how his wedding was about to get cancelled after director Nagesh Kukunoor learned about it just before the filming of their 2005 National Award-winning film ‘Iqbal’.

In an interview to ETimes, the actor told that he asked the director for a leave on December 31, just three days before the shooting was about to start. Nagesh got disappointed assuming that the actor wanted to go for partying but when Talpade told him that he was going to tie the knot with wife Deepti on that day, he was asked to cancel his wedding.

Nagesh wanted the wedding to get cancelled as he supposed Shreyas to play the role of a teenager in the film and he couldn’t be a married man in real life.

Further, the 45-year-old actor said, “Here I was, a middle-class guy whose wedding cards had gone out, being told to cancel it; I didn’t know what to do. It was after a lot of convincing, and assuring him that I would keep the wedding under wraps, that he let me have a day off.”

Shreyas said that he tried his best to keep his marriage a secret from the press and the world. But when the film was going to get premiered, Deepti wanted to attend it. He added, “By then she and Nagesh were well-acquainted with each other; he is her rakhi brother, in fact. So, he told her to attend the premiere as his sister. On the first day, Deepti fainted outside the theatre because she was so overwhelmed with emotion to see me on the big screen.”

After seeing Deepti a lot of times, producer Subhash Ghai enquired about the same and when he got to know who she really was, Ghai was shocked and refused to believe that Shreyas was married.

The ‘Iqbal’ actor said, “To him, I was an 18-year-old boy who had had a child marriage and was not even feeding his wife, making her faint.”
