Amber Heard has agreed to settle her defamation case against ex-husband Johnny Depp, she announced in an Instagram post on Monday. The 36-year-old called the decision to settle with Depp, “very difficult” adding that it followed “a great deal of deliberation.” She has agreed to pay Johnny Depp $1 million for settlement.

Heard penned a lengthy statement on Instagram and claimed her life was destroyed by the court cases. “It’s important for me to say that I never chose this. I defended my truth and in doing so my life as I knew it was destroyed. The vilification I have faced on social media is an amplified version of the ways in which women are re-victimised when they come forward,” Heard wrote.

Heard described how she had lost faith in getting justice in the American legal system, comparing it to her treatment in the UK courts. She claimed that her former husband has won in the Virginia courtroom because of a vote for popularity and power over reason and due process.

In March 2019, Depp filed a defamation against Heard after she published an op-ed in the Washington Post, describing herself as “public figure representing domestic abuse.” The two have been married for two years before divorcing in 2017.

After a protracted trial earlier this year, a Virginia jury ruled that Depp and Heard had defamed each other. Heard by publishing the op-ed and Depp through a statement made by his attorney in which she was accused of perpetrating a “hoax.”

Heard was directed to pay Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, the latter sum of which was brought down to $350,000 to comply with statutory corp. Depp was ordered to pay heard $2 million. The following month, Heard filed an appeal, with her attorney citing “errors” made by the court. However, the Aquaman actor has now decided to withdraw her appeal.
