Amitabh Bachchan, according to Amjad Khan’s wife, was the one who signed the hospital documents for her husband’s surgery. Amjad was involved in a car accident on his way to filming The ‘Great Gambler’.

In a new interview, she said that actor Amitabh Bachchan had given his signature in hospital documents for the doctors to perform a tracheostomy on Amjad. Shehla said that Amitabh ‘must have been nervous’ as nobody was sure if Amjad would make it.

Amjad’s wife stated that the accident occurred in Sawantwadi, near Goa, while she was six months pregnant with their daughter Ahlam. Her face had been smashed and her bones had been broken, she claimed. Her left hand was out of the socket while her right hand was in a sling. In the case of Amjad, 13 of his ribs and his femur bone were broken. After penetrating his chest, the steering wheel ruptured his lung. He was gasping for air and suffering from internal bleeding. Amjad, according to Shehla, was more concerned about her and the loss of their child. He needed to be operated in Goa, which is when Amitji signed for the doctors to proceed.

She continued, “Amjad and Amitji were best friends. He was taken aback when Amjad scribbled the term ‘tracheostomy’ on a scrap of paper and asked Amitji if he would be undergoing it. In fact, even in that state, he correctly spelt the difficult word “

Amjad was initially cast for the role of Mr Saxena in The Great Gambler but was unable to continue due to the accident. He was replaced by Utpal Dutt.
