During a panel at Television Critic Association 2022, Tony Gilroy revealed that the first season of Andor begins at 5 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin). Five years before the main events of Rogue One and the beginning of A New Hope. Andor is a prequel to Rogue One. It is before Andor met Jyn Erso and they stole the Death Star plans.

Season one will comprise 12 episodes, and will cover a year’s long time. The second season of Andor will cover the other four years and will take place from 4 to 0 BBY. The date system for the Star Wars timeline uses the Battle of Yavin as a base point. Events that occur after the Battle of Yavin are denoted as ABY, and events that occur before are denoted as BBY.

After Rogue One saw Cassian Andor meet his end, it is surprising that the series is a prequel to that film. In fact, it takes place five years prior, which means it overlaps in the timeline with the animated series Star Wars: Rebels. According to ScreenRant, the series is placed in the space between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

In the interview with Empire, Tony Gilroy emphasized the “huge” scale of the series, explaining the shooting schedules, in blocks of three episodes, is what led to the four-year timeline for season 2. The series stars Diego Luna as Cassian Andor. Genevieve O’Reilly, Stellan Skarsgard, Adria Arjona, Denis Gough, Kyle Soller and Fiona Shaw will also appear in the series. The filming of the series took place at Pinewood Studios in London and the United Kingdom.
