Kanye West,
or Ye, the American rapper has quite firmly established himself as controversy’s
favourite child. On Friday, Balenciaga, the fashion label that has long
associated itself with Ye, cut ties with the rapper over his controversial
remarks on George Floyd during a podcast last week. During the podcast, Kanye
West said George Floyd did not die because a police officer
put his knee to his
neck but because Floyd was on fentanyl, a pain medication said to be addictive.

Trevor Noah, the stand-up comedian who hosts The Daily Show,
who is on his way out, spoke on Kanye West during the “Behind the Scenes”
section of the show on Friday. Noah spoke about Kanye when he was asked by an
audience member why he was “beefing” with the rapper.

This is what Trevor Noah said:

When the audience member asked, Noah repeated the question: “Why
am I beefing with Ye?”

He then went on to say: “That’s an interesting way to phrase
it because a beef has to go both ways.” Noah then went on to explain what the
word beef means to him saying a beef is what two hip-hop artists have with one
another.

On Kanye specifically, Noah said: “I was never beefing with
Kanye West, I was concerned about Kanye West. And genuinely, I mean this,
because, if somebody says to me or to anyone that they have a mental health
issue, and they say to everyone that when they don’t take their medication they
can’t control themselves and then everyone ignores when that person is having
an episode and they haven’t taken their medication and they platform the person
and then they put them up, I sometimes think it is a little sh*tty to be honest.”

“Like, my grandfather was bipolar, and one thing we knew in
the family was, I am not saying Kanye is bipolar, I am just saying my
grandfather was bipolar, and one thing we knew was when he was having one of
his episodes he could act in a certain way, could do certain things….”

Noah then said: “I grew up loving Kanye. There are few hip
hop artists who have shaped how I see music, the punchlines that he had in
every single song, it was like listening to comedy, the sketches that he had.
He loved stand-up comedy.” Noah also discusses Kanye’s influence on hip-hop
culture and his influence on fashion and how he changed the paradigm.”
