According to A24, Disappointment Boulevard by Ari Aster has been renamed Beau is Afraid. A poster of an animated little boy could be seen in that same tweet.

Aster directed the short film Beau in 2011. Phoenix’s character would play an “extremely anxious but pleasant-looking man who has a fraught relationship with his overbearing mother and never knew his father,” according to the description of the movie: a “decades-spanning surrealist horror film set in an alternate present.” When his mother passes away, he travels home, facing some terrifying supernatural dangers.

When Disappointment was formally unveiled in February 2021, Midsommar filmmaker Aster previously stated that his upcoming movie will be a four-hour “nightmare comedy.”

Aster recently assured in an interview that his upcoming motion picture is certainly not a horror movie. “It might take me a few movies before I wind back around to [horror], but I love horror and I’m sure I’ll be back,” he added.

“Head trauma will ALWAYS have a place in my films,” he said as a disclaimer.

Along with Phoenix, the film also stars Nathan Lane, Parker Posey, Patti LuPone, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Amy Ryan, and Patti LuPone. Henderson declared that the movie’s production was completed in October 2021.

“[Joaquin] and Ari were so simpatico, and they worked together for the whole film. I came in pretty close to the end of the shoot and so they had been working a while. And their way of working together was like they were really old friends. They could get upset and make up in the span of seconds, it seemed. But the work was always the better for it,” Henderson said previously.

After Midsommar and Hereditary, this is Aster’s third film to be released through A24. Through their production company Square Peg, Aster and Lars Knudsen collaborate with A24 to produce the movie.

On Beau Is Afraid, Aster collaborates once more with Pawel Pogorzelski, the cinematographer for Midsommar and Hereditary, whom he first met while they were both attending the AFI Conservatory.

Alongside Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux, lead actor Phoenix will reprise his role as Arthur Fleck for Beau Is Afraid.

The lead role of the iconic French leader in Ridley Scott’s Napoleon will also be performed by Academy Award winner Phoenix. The movie will look at Napoleon’s marriage to Josephine, who is played by Vanessa Kirby. Over twenty years after the pair’s Gladiator, which won the 2000 Oscar, Phoenix and filmmaker Scott return.
