Media Giant Amazon Studios has announced Blade Runner 2099, a live-action series directed by Ridley Scott. It will be a short series with ten episodes and a sequel to the feature film Blade Runner 2049, which was released in 2017. 

Vernon Sanders, the head of Amazon Studios’ global television, appreciated Ridley Scott’s 1982 film Blade Runner and said, “one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time”.

He further added, “We are honored to be able to present this continuation of the Blade Runner franchise, and are confident that by teaming up with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions and the remarkably talented Silka Luisa, Blade Runner 2099 will uphold the intellect, themes and spirit of its film predecessors.”

Plot 

The upcoming series will be a neo-noir limited series and is set 50 years after the most recent sequel, Blade Runner 2049. Though the actual plot is under wraps but as a sequel series, it will be set in the Blade Runner franchise and will explore similar themes of the 1982 and 2017 Blade Runner films.

1982’s Blade Runner is an adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? The film takes place in a dystopian Los Angeles in 2019, where the powerful Tyrell Corporation has created replicants who are artificial humans and they work on space colonies. 

In the 2017 sequel, Ryan Gosling played the role of a replicant blade runner who discovers a secret that poses a threat to society’s stability.

Release Date 

Amazon Studios hasn’t provided an official release date for Blade Runner 2099 and the project was announced on September 15, 2022. The live-action series is in its production stage and will take a significant amount of time to develop the series’ science fiction visual effects.

Cast 

The Cast of the series is yet a surprise for the audience and the casting team of Blade Runner 2099 hasn’t provided any casting updates for the upcoming sci-fi TV series. Silka Luisa the creator of the American thriller series Shining Girls will be the showrunner for this project.
