The Philosophy of Modern Song is the latest book by legendary musician and songwriter, Bob Dylan. The book’s publisher, Simon & Schuster, had sold a number of $600 copies of the book that they had advertised would be signed by Dylan himself. However, fans took to social media to compare the signatures and came to the conclusion that the signatures were not done by Dylan himself, and instead had replica signatures made using autopen technology.

Books and memorabilia with autopen signatures are not considered valuable in the collectors’ world, but many had still been asking for thousands of dollars on eBay for copies of The Philosophy of Modern Song. Now the publisher has made an official announcement saying that people who had bought the books with replica signatures will be refunded.

In a tweet, the publisher said, “To those who purchased the ‘Philosophy of Modern Song’ limited edition, we want to apologize,” adding, “As it turns out, the limited edition books do contain Bob’s original signature, but in a penned replica form. We are addressing this information by providing each purchaser with an immediate refund.”

Dylan’s official Twitter account earlier tweeted a message saying, “Each individual copy of the limited signed edition of Bob Dylan’s THE PHILOSOPHY OF MODERN SONG was personally signed by the author, and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the publisher of Simon & Schuster.” However, the tweet has now been removed from the account.

Dylan, the 2016 literature Nobel Prize winner, has earlier offered signed editions of his books, but this is the first time such an issue has come to light. The prolific musician has written three books till date. His first, Tarantula, is a collection of prose poetry and was published in 1971. Dylan released his memoir called Chronicles: Volume One in 2004, and 18 years later, he chose to come out with The Philosophy of Modern Song, a collection of essays on music by other artists.
