Bobby Caldwell, an R&B veteran who was also known as the Cat in the Hat because of his 1980 sophomore album of the same name, passed away at the age of 71.

After a protracted battle with sickness, the singer and songwriter passed away on Tuesday night at his New Jersey home peacefully. The artist is now survived by his wife Mary Caldwell and their children.

The iconic track What You Won’t Do For Love made the four-decade-old career of the songwriter famous. Caldwell’s health issues began around 12 years ago following a bad antibiotic reaction that left him with significant neuropathy and ruptured Achilles tendons on both sides of his body.

Even after numerous treatments, he had health problems right up until the moment of his death.

Bobby Caldwell was born in Manhattan but spent his childhood in Miami, Florida. His mother was a real estate agent, and one of her customers was reggae artist Bob Marley.

Mary Caldwell is the wife of Bobby Cadwell. The couple got married to each other in 2004. She is the Vice President of Bobby Caldwell Entertainment LTD, according to her LinkedIn page.

At the time of his death, the couple and their children were living on a horse farm in New Jersey. According to a message posted on Caldwell’s official Twitter account on March 15, 2023, Bobby passed away there at home.

“Bobby passed away here at home. I held him tight in my arms as he left us. I am forever heartbroken. Thanks to all of you for your many prayers over the years. He had been ‘FLOXED,’ it took his health over the last 6 years and 2 months. Rest with God, my Love. -Mary Caldwell,” the statement read.

Bobby Cadwell’s musical interests were impacted as a child by Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. Caldwell’s 1978 song, “What You Won’t Do for Love,” which became a mainstay of R&B radio, is perhaps his most well-known work.

Both “My Flame” from The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Sky’s the Limit” and “Open Your Eyes” from Common’s “The Light” are noteworthy hip-hop samples from Caldwell’s career. Caldwell kept making music until 2015 when he released Cool Uncle.
