In the years leading up to the bombings, the Tsarnaev brothers lived in various locations in the Boston area, including an apartment in Cambridge and a house in Watertown. It was in the Watertown house that the brothers were confronted by police in a violent shootout that left Tamerlan dead and Dzhokhar injured and captured.

The Tsarnaev brothers were motivated by a radical interpretation of Islam, and had become increasingly radicalized in the years leading up to the bombings. They had also been influenced by the online teachings of Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born imam who was a senior member of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula before he was killed in a U.S. drone strike in 2011.
The Boston Marathon bombings were a tragic event that shook the city and the country, and led to a massive manhunt for the perpetrators. The capture and trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, and the death of Tamerlan, brought some closure to the families of the victims and to the city as a whole.
