Brad Pitt poured in a fortune of $40 million to purchase a castle in California. The Hollywood actor bought the historic clifftop home, where multiple celebrities have lived before. The elite property is located south of Gibson Beach, between the Pacific Coast Highway and the ocean.

Who originally built the castle?

The clifftop residence’s construction was completed in 1918. Famed arts and crafts architect Charles Greene was reportedly inspired by the Tintagel Castle in England’s Cornwall. The building has a Mediterranean theme and was constructed using sandstone, according to San Francisco Gate.

Who has lived here before?

Known as the D.L. James House, the castle was named after its first owner. It was later occupied by his son. Since 1999, the castle has been registered under the name of Searock, a company that is linked to Chicago options trader Joe Ritchie and his wife Sharon.

Ritchie, who also owned a private investment group called Fox River Partners, died earlier this year.

Other properties owned by Brad Pitt

The ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ actor has often said that architecture is his passion, and he has proved it frequently. Some of these properties include a “haunted” Briarcliff Manor in Los Angeles, a beach-front 11-acre property in Santa Barbara, a midcentury-modern bachelor pad in Malibu, and a private villa in Spain’s Mallorca among many more.

Brad Pitt’s castle purchase deal was largely private as the property was not publicly listed for sale in California, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal. Real estate agents from the area have also clarified that it may just be the most expensive purchase in the Carmel area.

Actor Betty White‘s residence was also sold off this year for more than $13 million. She died late last year.
