One of the many reasons NBC brought Brooklyn Nine-Nine back from the brink of cancellation was the show’s endearing family dynamic — all of the characters have demonstrated their love for one another in a variety of ways.

Whether it’s literally taking bullets to the buttcheeks or attempting to save a friend from a pyramid scheme, these guys have gone above and beyond the call of friendship.

The characters in Brooklyn Nine-Nine have a lot of chemistry, which makes for some great scenes.

Here are five that really touched our hearts:

Anything To Do With Holt & Jake

Anyone would be scared of Jake’s authority issues, but not his boss/mentor/friend/new dad, Captain Holt. Furthermore, the contrast between the former’s general exuberance and the latter’s stoic demeanour makes for some brilliant comedy.

The captain gladly accepts his role as a stand-in father figure, even officiating the Peralta-Santiago wedding on short notice.

When Hitchcock & Scully Protect Their Informant

In one of the series’ most bizarre episodes, Hitchcock and Scully’s pasts reveal them to be super-cool (and super-hot) hunks; even Jake and Charles can’t decide which one is more attractive.

Peralta notices that one of the bags of money found at Gio Costa’s hideout was never logged in while following some new leads from an ’86 case. He suspects Hitchcock/Scully of stealing it but is pleasantly surprised to learn that the money was used to set up their informant, Marissa Costa after the NYPD refused to place her in witness protection.

When Jake Does Better Than Captain Latvia

Nikolaj politely requests Captain Latvia action figure from his father for Christmas, but the item does not arrive on time. Jake and Charles conduct a personal investigation and inadvertently discover a highly dangerous gun smuggling operation.

When the gangsters burn their goods, the pair loses all of Captain Latvia toys, but Jake gives his buddy a wrapped present for the kid anyway.

It turns out to be a policeman doll, and everyone melts when Nikolaj impersonates his father “Hello, my name is Detective Papa, and I’m going to the Farmers Market. I’m hoping they’ve aged the Gouda.”

When Madeline Wuntch Doesn’t Betray The Nine-Nine

Raymond Holt and Madeline Wuntch’s feud is epic in scale: think Superman and Lex Luthor, but without the planetary destruction. As a result, her support for Jake’s Suicide Squad plan to capture Commissioner Kelly, along with CJ and the Vulture, comes as a complete surprise.

Holt, in particular, is taken aback that she does not double-cross him like she has a thousand times before (although technically, her aim was to become the next Commissioner). Nonetheless, Wuntch’s support meant a lot to the nine-nine and the city of New York.

When Terry Loves Love (Which Is Always)

Almost every scene with Terry Jeffords is filled with warmth and compassion — his habit of taking the nine-nine under his wing exudes maternal vibes. He treasures too many things to count, from yoghurt to kreplach to Frasier to suspenders, but nothing is more important to him than love.
