Renowned singer-songwriter Coco Lee died on Wednesday. The news of her death was confirmed by her sisters on her social media account.

The singer’s sister Nancy Lee posted on her Sina Weibo account: “This year was supposed to mark Coco Lee’s 30th debut anniversary in the music industry. Throughout her 29-year career, she not only brought us endless joy and surprises with her powerful songs and dance performances but also worked tirelessly to pave the way for Chinese artists in the international music scene. We’re immensely proud of her accomplishments.”

Cause of death

Coco was suffering from depression in recent years and attempted suicide on Sunday. She was taken to hospital in an unconscious state and slipped into a coma before being pronounced dead on Wednesday. Her family expressed their gratitude to healthcare staff and fans for their support.

Husband Bruce Rockowitz

Coco married Bruce Rockowitz, on 27 October 2011 in a lavish Jewish wedding ceremony in Hong Kong. He is a Jewish-Canadian businessman and former CEO of Li & Fung. In 2016, she revealed that she has two adult stepdaughters from her husband’s previous marriage.

Coco Lee was 48 years old at the time of her death. She was born on January 17, 1975.

Career

She was the first runner-up at the 12th Annual New Talent Singing Awards in Hong Kong after she sang Whitney Houston’s Run To You. The very next day, she was offered a recording contract with Capital Artists. She made her debut by appearing in several compilation albums, such as Red Hot Hits ’93 Autumn Edition. In 1994, she released her first solo albums in Mandarin, Love from Now On and Promise Me, working with Fancy Pie Records.

Her single, Do You Want My Love entered the US music charts. Her first English-language album was Just No Other Way (1999). She even performed at the Oscars, after her song A Love Before Time was nominated as the Best Original Song from the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Other than these,  Walt Disney Pictures hired her to sing the theme song Reflection and be the voice of the heroine Fa Mulan in the Mandarin version of Mulan. She also performed in Michael Jackson’s “Michael Jackson and friends” charity concert

Family

Coco was the youngest of three children. She was born to an Indonesian father and a Hongkong-Cantonese mother. She has two elder sisters, Nancy and Carol. Nancy was formerly her manager. Her father died before she was born.
