The Congress Working Committee (CWC), the highest decision-making body of the party, will meet on Monday amid a raging debate over party leadership. The issue is likely to figure prominently in the online meeting.

“A meeting of the Congress Working Committee will be held on Monday, the 24th August, 2020 at 11.00 AM via video conferencing,” party general secretary KC Venugopal said in a tweet.

Various reports have claimed that over 100 Congressmen have written to the party high command over the leadership issue. Suspended party leader Sanjay Jha had tweeted that leaders, including MPs, have written to Sonia Gandhi over the issue, however, the Congress denied any such letter. Sources said that Congress president Sonia Gandhi has conveyed to top leaders of the party that she is not interested in continuing on the post owing to her health. The 73-year-old leader had reluctantly agreed to lead the party when Rahul Gandhi stepped down in 2019 after the Lok Sabha election debacle.

There has been a clamour within the party for Rahul Gandhi to be made the Congress president again. Some party workers are in favour of Sonia’s daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra taking command.

However, both Rahul and Priyanka are said to be in favour of a non-Gandhi family member to lead the Grand Old Party.

After the recent setback in Madhya Pradesh and the scare in Rajasthan which put the Congress central leadership to test, a large section of the party is said to be unhappy over the way top leaders are running the show.
