American rap enthusiasts were handed a shock on late Wednesday, September 29, 2022, when news broke out that popular rapper Coolio, regarded widely for his 1995 track Gangsta’s Paradise, died in Los Angeles.

Coolio, 59, was visiting a friend when he went to the bathroom and did not come out after a while. After calling him several times, his friend went in to find him lying on the floor and called emergency services. Paramedics arrived to find him dead and suspected a cardiac arrest behind his death. However, the official cause of death has not been announced till now. Coolio is survived by his 10 children.

Coolio’s net worth

According to Celebrity Net Worth, the popular rapper who won the Grammy Award, MTV Video Music Award and the American Music Award, had a net worth of around $1.5 million when he died.

He rose to prominence with his single Gangsta’s Paradise, which was used in John N. Smith’s 1995 film Dangerous Minds. The song helped his popularity to boom and won him the Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance in 1996.

As per a report by Business Insider, Coolio received $23,227 per annum as royalties for Gangsta’s Paradise. The rapper also generated between $134,000 and $225,000 per year for his 123 songs. 

Apart from royalties from his music, Coolio has made appearances in several films and television shows during his life.

However, even before the release of Gangsta’s Paradise, Coolio received acclaim for his debut solo album titled ‘It takes a Thief’. It was also his work after he signed a contract with Tommy Boy Records.

Coolio has released numerous hit singles throughout his career, however, none became as famous as Gangsta’s Paradise, which became the top single across all categories in the United States in 1995 and also led the chart in a dozen European countries, including the United Kingdom, France and Germany.
