Criminal Minds‘ revival has officially been greenlit by Paramount+, after a year of on and off dealmaking. Ten new episodes have been ordered and as per Deadline’s exclusive, a licensing deal had been reached with the streaming platform in February.

Several months were spent bringing cast members on board, but for now, production is slated to begin on August 21. Here’s all you need to know about the upcoming ‘Criminal Minds’ revival series.

Criminal Minds revival release date

While an exact release date remains unknown for now, the production starts in August. Considering it is a 10-episode deal, for now, everything could wrap by year-end, which would make ‘Criminal Minds’ revival available for streaming as early as 2023.

Criminal Minds revival cast

Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, Adam Rodriguez, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler and Paget Brewster are all back for the upcoming series.

Mantegna, who plays Agent Rossi, also shared a picture of him on the soundstage, captioning it “doing a little inspection today for an upcoming project”.

Matthew Gray Gubler, an original cast member, who played the memorable genius Spencer Reid is missing from the revival. The actor had previously expressed a wish to move on from the role after playing it for 15 years.

Daniel Henney, who played Matthew Simmons on ‘Criminal Minds’, won’t likely return as well since the actor is now part of ‘The Wheel Of Time’, which is filming in Prague, allowing him to only star in the Paramount+ revival if his schedule permits.

Criminal Minds revival plot

The original series focused on the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), which used profiling to look into crimes and find perpetrators. Mantegna’s Rossi leads the group, while Cook plays Agent JJ Jareau, Tyler is Agent Tara Lewis, and Rodriguez is Agent Luke Alvez. Vangsness returns as the chirpy but reliable Technical Analyst Penelope Garcia while Brewster will be seen as Unit Chief Emily Prentiss.

Contrary to the broadcast format, where the BAU tackled a new case in each episode, the new season will see them deal with a single case over the course of ten episodes.
