Talk show icon Jerry Springer died Thursday at 79 at his home in suburban Chicago. Apart from spending 27 years as a successful host of The Jerry Springer Show, the legend was also featured on The Simpsons.
“Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word,” said Jene Galvin, a lifelong friend and spokesman for the family. “He’s irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart, and humor will live on.”

Some of the most nostalgic and memorable moments on The Simpsons come from its Treehouse of Horror episodes, a series of anthology shorts that take inspiration from horror, sci-fi, and fantasy genres. Springer appeared in one such short during the tenth season of the show in October 1998. It was called Starship Poopers, written by David X. Cohen.
In the short, Marge discovers that Maggie has sprouted her first tooth. Turns out, instead of a tooth, it’s a sharp fang. The infant suddenly loses her legs and they are replaced with green tentacles. After that, her pacifier sends out a signal to space to summon the tentacled green aliens known as Kang and Kodos, who were the main villains of the Treehouse of Horror series after debuting in the show in its second season in 1990.
It was then revealed that Maggie’s real father is Kang, who shows up demanding that the family hand over Maggie. However, Homer decides that the only way to resolve an argument that involves extra-terrestrial affairs and child custody is to take the matter to The Jerry Springer Show.

The action cuts to an animated episode of Springer’s show with a segment titled, “My Daddy is a Space Monster.” Springer had voiced himself in the segment as he asked Homer how he felt when he found out that Maggie was fathered by “a drooling space octopus.” The segment also features Kang, who makes quite an entrance with cheers and boos. He also hands a bouquet of flowers to Marge. At one point Homer charges at Kang, and punches him him in the eye. Homer is shown to be so angry that he screams expletives that need to be bleeped by the censors.
Springer attempts to deliver his sensible Final Thought, which was his signature manner to end the show, Maggie lunges at Springer and wraps her tentacles around his face. A battle begins between Homer, Kang, and Jerry Springer. Springer ends up passing out after Kang’s tentacle is wrapped around his mouth.
