The highly-anticipated fourth and final season of HBO’s hit drama Succession opened with a record-breaking audience of 2.3 million viewers on its first night, according to Nielsen.

This topped the previous high of 1.7 million viewers who tuned in for last season’s finale on its first night.

Although the first-night audience is usually only a fraction of the total viewership for HBO shows, last season’s episodes averaged 7.2 million viewers when delayed viewing was taken into account. These numbers suggest that more people are tuning in to Succession just as it is reaching its conclusion. In fact, HBO reported four times the viewership of previous Succession episodes on HBO Max in the week leading up to the season premiere.

The premiere episode showcased the tense relationships between family patriarch Logan Roy and his children. Critic Brian Lowry wrote for CNN that the primary function of the episode was to set the stage for the battles and challenges to come. It is clear that viewers are eagerly anticipating the conflict and drama that will unfold in the rest of the season.

Succession has won two Emmy Awards for Best Drama and has been praised for its sharp writing, talented cast, and gripping storyline. The show centers around the Roy family, a wealthy and powerful clan that runs a media empire. The family’s internal power struggles and backstabbing make for addictive viewing, and fans have been eagerly awaiting the final season since it was announced last year.
