Disney’s decision to release “Black Widow” on Disney Plus at the same time as theaters has landed the company in a legal battle with Scarlett Johansson, the actress playing the Marvel superhero.

Much of the actress’ remuneration for the film was tied to the box office performance of “Black Widow”. Attorneys for Johansson have told a Los Angeles court that the actress’s contract was breached when the studio opted not to release the film exclusively in theaters, a move they claim hit the ticket sales for the Avengers spinoff, Variety reported.

“Disney intentionally induced Marvel’s breach of the agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel,” the lawsuit was quoted by Variety as alleging.

The suit notes that Disney’s stock rose after the company disclosed the rental figures on Disney+.

“Disney chose to placate Wall Street investors and pad its bottom line, rather than allow its subsidiary Marvel to comply with the agreement. To know one’s surprise Disney breach of the agreement successfully pulled millions of fans away from the theatres and toward its Disney + streaming service,” the lawsuit says.

Johansson’s team has estimated that the decision to release the film concurrently on Disney+ resulted in a loss of $50 million of bonuses that the company would have otherwise been bound to pay the actress.

Disney had announced in March the release of the film among several other titles on Disney+, the company’s streaming service, as well as theatres at the same time.

Upon its release, the film created a pandemic-era box office record with its $80 million in North America and earned an additional $78 million overseas and $60 million on Disney Plus.
