Eileen Ryan, the mother of two-time Academy Award-winning actor and filmmaker Sean Penn, has died at the age of 94 in her home in Malibu, California. Her other son, Michael, is a music composer.

Michael Penn paid a tribute to the late actress on Twitter with a picture of his mother at a young age, captioned, “We lost mom yesterday”, followed by a heartbreak emoji. Check out the post right here:

Ryan was herself an actor, but had to step back from her professional commitments to focus on raising her children. However, she did return to acting later. Known as Eileen Annucci before her marriage to actor-director Leo Penn, Ryan began her career on Broadway in 1953 with Sing Till Tomorrow.

In 1958, Ryan was seen in the play Comes a Day alongside Judith Anderson, George C. Scott and Larry Hagman. She was also cast in one of the episodes in the first season of the anthology series, The Twilight Zone, titled A World of Difference.

She has acted in a number of films like At Close Range, The Crossing Guard, Parenthood, Magnolia, and The Assassination of Richard Nixon. She was last seen on screen in the 2016 film Rules Don’t Apply, directed by legendary actor Warren Beatty.

Leo Penn cast her in various other shows that he had directed, including The Detectives, Ben Casey and Bonanza. The couple first met in New York during the rehearsals for The Iceman Cometh. They married only a few months later and stayed together until 1998, when Penn died at the age of 77.

Ruan gave birth to her first son, Michael, in 1958. Sean Penn was born in 1960, followed by Chris Penn, who passed away in 2006 at the age of 40 after suffering from a heart disease.
