Hayley McQueen promised to raise a toast to Elton John tonight at Glastonbury after the musician paid a poignant tribute to her late father Gordon.

The former Scotland star McQueen passed away from dementia at the age of 70 while the Rocketman singer was on tour in Aberdeen.

Following the tragic news about the former St. Mirren, Leeds United, and Manchester United defender, condolences flooded in from all around the world.

Football-daft John, who remembered Gordon’s spectacular goal against England at Wembley in 1977, was among those who attended the memorial service for McQueen.

The popstar had a connection to the family with McQueen’s son Eddie – Hayley’s brother – a chef who had been part of Elton’s entourage earlier in the tour.

In a video posted by Hayley on Twitter, the singer told the Aberdeen crowd: “When we started off this tour, one of our chefs was Eddie McQueen, who’s the son of Gordon McQueen who passed away today.

“I want to give my condolences to Eddie, his family and to Gordon who was a great footballer.

“I always remember the goal he scored against England at Wembley when they tore the goalposts down.

“But in all sincerity thank you Eddie for what you did for us.

“And we send you and your family all of our love.”

She wrote on social media: “Elton John performed in Aberdeen the day my dad died and we later found out he did this.

“Tonight I’ll have a drink while watching the legend himself at Glastonbury.

“A little light relief in this darkness.”

Earlier, Hayley had acknowledged the football community for all of their support at a trying period.

“There has been such an outpouring of love for my wonderful dad, truly overwhelming,” she wrote at the time.

“Only just managed to get though all my messages, sorry to anyone I’ve not replied to.
