Baz Luhrmann’s biopic on Hollywood icon Elvis Presley, titled ‘Elvis’, is turning out to be a smashing hit which could be on its way to dethrone ‘Top Gun: Maverick’.

The biopic, which stars Austin Butler as Presley, is projected to swoop in about $30 million from 3,906 theaters on its opening weekend after it topped Friday’s chart with $12.7 million.

The collection could be enough for it to surpass ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, which continues to soar to greater heights in its fifth weekend at the box office.

Warner Bros’ ‘Elvis’ has lured in older moviegoers: 65% of them are above the age of 35, including 30% who are above 55. Unsurprisingly, the biopic has done well in the South. Viewers have given it an A- CinemaScore, and a 79% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film also stars Tom Hanks as music manager Colonel Tom Parker and Olivia DeJonge as the King of Rock and Roll’s beloved, Priscilla Presley.

Similar to ‘Elvis’, Blumhouse and Universal’s horror flick ‘The Black Phone’ is exceeding box office expectations. On Friday, the Ethan Hawke-starrer garnered $10.2 million, thanks to its young moviegoers aged between 18 and 24.

The film, directed Scott Derrickson, revolves around a young boy who escapes a serial killer with the help of supernatural forces.

Meanwhile, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, which crossed the $900 million mark worldwide earlier this week, added yet another milestone to its success, this time, by becoming the second Hollywood film of the pandemic era to fly past a collection of $500 million at the domestic box office after last year’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, which earned $804.7 million.

Universal’s ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ also continues to roar loud as it approaches $700 million in global ticket sales. Domestically, it has surpassed the $300 million mark.
