English actor Tobias Menzies wins outstanding supporting actor in a drama series for the role of Prince Philip in ‘The Crown.’

Menzies starred opposite Olivia Colman’s rendition of Queen Elizabeth in the fourth season of the Netflix series, which has already taken four Emmys on Sunday night.

Menzies, a 47-year-old London-born actor, is also known for his roles on “Outlander” and “Game of Thrones.”

He beat out fellow nominees Giancarlo Esposito, O-T Fagbenle, John Lithgow, Max Minghella, Chris Sullivan, Bradley Whitford and Michael K. Williams.

Meanwhile, television director Jessica Hobbs won the award for outstanding directing for a drama series award for directing the show on the Royal Family. Gillian Anderson, who played the role of Margaret Thatcher, won the supporting actress in the same category while the writer of the show Peter Morgan won outstanding writing for a drama series award.    

Netflix’s historical drama focuses on the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. It begins in 1947, the period of Elizabeth’s marriage with Philip. Each season new characters are incorporated in order to make up for the ageing process and time periods. The second season is set between the Suez Canal crisis and Prince Edward’s birth. The third season spans across Harold Wilson’s tenure as Prime Minister. While the fourth season, arguably the best one yet, shows Prince Charles’s marriage to Lady Diana Spencer.

The show is the hot favourite to bag the award for the Best Drama series. They have received this nomination for three of its previous seasons as well but has failed to convert them into a win. However, it seems like it’s finally “The Crown”s time to shine.  

As per media reports, a guest list of 500-odd nominees has been made for the Emmys to gather in the venue’s outdoor section, under strict pandemic precautions including proof of inoculation. Angela Bassett, Michael Douglas, Dolly Parton, and Awkwafina are among the presenters.
