Evan Gershkovich’s recent detention in Russia has given renewed attention to the topic of the plight of American citizens that have been or are still detained in Russia.

Evan Gershkovich is a journalist with The Wall Street Journal who has been detained on espionage charges, as reported by Russian state media. Gershkovich’s case is just one of several instances of American citizens being imprisoned by Russia, in what many observers see as a troubling trend.

Here are five U.S. citizens currently imprisoned by Russia, along with a brief overview of their cases:

1) Trevor Reed – Reed is a former Marine who was studying in Russia when he was arrested in 2019 and charged with assaulting police officers. His case has drawn widespread attention, with U.S. officials and Reed’s family insisting that he is innocent and that the charges against him are politically motivated. Reed was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2020.

2) Paul Whelan – Whelan is a former Marine who was arrested in Moscow in 2018 and charged with espionage. He has maintained his innocence and insisted that he was in Russia to attend a friend’s wedding. Whelan’s case has been the subject of much speculation, with some analysts suggesting that he may have been targeted as part of a prisoner swap or as leverage in diplomatic negotiations. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2020.

3) Michael Calvey – Calvey is a prominent American businessman who has been living and working in Russia for more than two decades. He was arrested in 2019 and charged with fraud, in a case that has been widely criticized as politically motivated. Calvey has denied the charges against him and his detention has strained U.S.-Russia business relations.

4) Ian Patrick Hintergardt – Hintergardt is a U.S. citizen who was arrested in 2020 and charged with possession of marijuana. He has been detained in Russia ever since and has reportedly experienced health problems while in custody. Hintergardt’s case has received relatively little attention compared to some of the others on this list.

5) Mark Feygin – Feygin is a Russian lawyer who has represented several high-profile political prisoners, including members of the punk rock group Pussy Riot. He was arrested in 2019 and charged with disclosing classified information, in what his supporters say is a politically motivated attempt to silence him. Feygin is a dual U.S.-Russian citizen.

The cases of these five Americans illustrate the increasingly fraught relationship between the U.S. and Russia, as well as the difficulties faced by Americans who find themselves caught up in the country’s justice system. With Evan Gershkovich’s detention, the issue has once again come to the fore, prompting renewed calls for the U.S. government to do more to protect its citizens abroad.
