James Caan, the Academy Award-nominated actor, died on Thursday at the age of 82. The news was announced on Caan’s official Twitter account.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time,” the post read.
Caan is best known for his performance as Sonny Corleone in “The Godfather.” He received an Oscar nomination in 1973 for his portrayal of Sonny in the Francis Ford Coppola film. He has had a long, successful career that spanned nearly six decades.

James Caan’s most famous role was that of the eldest brother in the Corleone family, aka Sonny Corleone. The role earned Caan a Golden Globe, and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He appears in a flashback in The Godfather Part II.

Caan had a box office hit as Paul Sheldon in the psychological thriller Misery. The movie is adapted from the Stephen King novel of the same name.
Thief (1981)
Directed by Michael Mann, Caan stars as a professional safecracker in this action heist thriller.
The Yards (2000)
Directed by James Gray, this movie is about the corruption in the New York City transit department. Caan starred as a railway car repair company CEO, alongside Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix, and Charlize Theron.

Elf (2003)
Caan plays lovable biological father of Will Ferrell in Elf. His comic side was seen in this film.
