GLAAD, the LGBTQ media advocacy organization, is set to hold its 34th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton on Thursday, March 30, 2023, and in New York City at the Hilton Midtown on Saturday, May 13, 2023. The award ceremonies will be hosted by the renowned comedian Margaret Cho.

The GLAAD Media Awards aim to recognize media projects that promote fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community. The nominees were released in January, with 295 nominees across 33 categories. This year’s ceremony will also introduce two new categories, Outstanding Podcast and Outstanding Live TV Journalism – Segment or Special.

In addition to the nominees, GLAAD will present Special Recognition honors to five media projects and individuals that spotlight diverse segments of the LGBTQ community, including Alejandra Caraballo, Drag Story Hour, Jerrod Carmichael’s Rothaniel (HBO), The Lesbian Bar Project, #Letters4TransKids, and En Sus Palabras [serie] (TelevisaUnivision).
The ceremony will also feature performances by prominent LGBTQ artists, with the lineup yet to be announced. Meanwhile, Salina EsTitties and Sasha Colby, current stars of RuPaul’s Drag Race, have already announced nominees in select GLAAD Media Awards categories in a ‘GLAAD Drag Story Time’ video that was released on GLAAD’s YouTube.
The event will be attended by an array of presenters from various fields, including entertainment, politics, and media, who will be handing out the awards to the deserving winners.
GLAAD’s Barbara Gittings Award for Excellence in LGBTQ Media will be presented to The Los Angeles Blade and The Washington Blade this year. The award recognizes pioneering individuals, groups, or community media outlets that have made a significant contribution to the development of LGBTQ media.
The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies not only celebrate the achievements of the LGBTQ community in media but also help fund GLAAD’s work towards accelerating LGBTQ acceptance. With the escalating attacks on the LGBTQ community, GLAAD believes it’s more important than ever to have representation in the media to educate and grow acceptance of LGBTQ people.
