The Golden Globes were
founded in 1943, when eight LA-based columnists brimming with the passion to
analyse cinema sat down together. After a hefty discussion, the
foreign team of entertainment writers then arrived at the conclusion to create what is now known as the Hollywood
Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

The saga began at 20th Century Fox in January of 1944, when only
five awards were rolled out for categories including Best Picture, Best Actor
in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Roll, Best Performance by an Actor
in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture, and Best Performance by an Actress in
a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture.

After the first ceremony
had taken place, the HFPA decided to conduct a contest to find a suitable
design for the trophy statuette. Marina Cisternas, the president of the
association back in 1945, bagged the contest, with a trophy that looked
like a golden coloured globe on top of a pedestal, wrapped around a
filmstrip. Also gold plated, the award instantly became the iconic Golden
Globe award
that it is today.

Soon after the informal award
ceremony of 1943, the Hollywood Foreign
Correspondents Association decided
to organise its first gala event at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Los Angeles, California. Ever
since then, the star-studded galas witnessed the presence of Hollywood biggies like Julie
Andrews, Laurence Harvey, Kim Novak, and others.

In 1952, the association rolled out a
new award to recognize “outstanding contribution to the entertainment field.” The
award, known as the Cecil B. deMille Award, is named after DeMille herself.

Up until the year of
1958, HFPA members took the responsibility to present awards to the winners. This
quickly changed after Frank Sinatra, along with Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.
took over the show with alcohol and cigarettes in hand. Ever since then,
celebrities have monopolized the presenter pool.

79 years later with a
long list of awards and all the notoriety in the world, the association has lately
been under fire, thanks to an LA Times expose on the committee’s lack of
diversity.

Fast forward to now, the
2022 Golden Globe Awards will not have a live telecast, as well as any hosts,
red carpets, or award presenting celebrities.
