The Gotham Awards are celebrated every year to honour the makers of independent films in the United States. The Gotham Film and Media Institute presents these awards. The 2022 nominees were announced by Jeffrey Sharp and Angelica Ross on October 25, 2022.

The Icon Tribute honour is given every year to screen legends who have left a lasting impact on the cinematic art form in the United States, and the award for the 2022 edition was given to Sidney Poitier, the first African-American man to win the Academy Award.

Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg was set to be present at the Gotham Awards this year to give the Performer Tribute Award to Michelle Williams. However, he could not be present at the ceremony since he has tested COVID positive, according to a report published by Variety.

The best moment of the show came when Adam Sandler went up to the stage to receive his award. The comedian-actor read out a speech that was apparently written by his daughters, which sent the entire audience into rolls of laughter.
